(Harrisburg) — The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency is keeping tabs on the soaking rain falling across the midstate.

PEMA has been in contact with the National Weather Service and county emergency services departments throughout the day. While spokesman Cory Angell reports no major incidents so far, he says floodwaters are forcing the closure of many local roadways. He adds several counties have activated their emergency operations centers to deal with issues of localized flooding.

“Turn around, don’t drown is a very simple motto but it’s very important,” Angell says, “and it’s amazing how many people we’ve lost in flooding situations because of the very simple fact that they’ve tried to ford water or walk through water.”

Angell stresses it is illegal in Pennsylvania to ignore or tamper with the signs and barricades that warn motorists of flooded roads.

Smaller waterways pose the greatest flood risk with this storm, as Angell notes the Susquehanna River is expected to remain within its banks.

While the heaviest bands of rain have subsided, moderate rainfall is expected into the day tomorrow.
