Study to examine possible York Co. school consolidation

(York) — A group of York area lawmakers wants to study the possible merger of administrative functions across the county’s 15-school districts.

Six Republican state House members from York County have written the state’s Independent Fiscal Office, requesting a financial analysis of a hypothetical consolidation of administrations.

They want to examine the possible effects on costs, taxes and state funding.

Representative Seth Grove says it’s not a plan for consolidation, it’s a non-binding study.

“I have no expectations of what’s going to come out of it,” says Grove. “It’s going to be raw data that we can move forward with and analyze. Maybe we’ll find some cost savings… I’m not sure.”

The study’s supporters believe a significant savings could benefit residents in all 15-districts — including York City Schools, which were placed in financial recovery status last December.

Representative Stan Saylor says the districts’ boundaries and identities would not be affected.

“This isn’t about doing away with Red Lion’s football team or Dallastown’s basketball team or somebody’s soccer program,” Saylor explains. “It’s still going to be the Red Lion Lion’s, it’ll still be the Wildcats or Central York Panthers or whatever it is. Remember that. This is not about making it one school. It’s about, how can we handle efficiencies in schools better.”

Any decision on consolidation would ultimately rest with the county’s voters. The IFO says it plans to have the analysis complete prior to the December 15th, 2014 due date.

York County is home to some 62,000 students.
