New weight restrictions coming to 75 state bridges in south central Pennsylvania

Seventy-five state-owned bridges in PennDOT Engineering District 8’s eight-county region will be posted with new or lowered weight restrictions to slow the rate of deterioration of those bridges and ensure safety.

Those structures are among the 1,000 structurally deficient bridges statewide that PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch authorized for new or added weight restrictions last Thursday, Aug. 22.

The restrictions will also apply on 36 locally-owned bridges in the District 8 area covering Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties.

PennDOT is taking this step because legislative inaction on transportation funding has left uncertain PennDOT’s ability to repair or replace these bridges. The lower weight limits will help extend the service life of these deteriorating bridges.

The following is a list of state-owned bridges in the eight-county region that will be posted in coming weeks, along with the new weight restrictions. The list includes combination loads, primarily tractor trailers, which have higher weight limits because of the difference in how their weight is distributed:

Adams County (nine bridges):

• U.S. Route 30 over Rock Creek in the east end of the Borough of Gettysburg, 36 tons.
• Route 34 over Opossum Creek, north of Biglerville, in Menallen Township, 34 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Route 116 over Willoughby Run, southwest of Gettysburg, in Cumberland Township, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Cranberry Road (State Route 1014) over Bermudian Creek between Tyrone and Huntington townships, 34 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Mason Dixon Road (State Route 3002) over a tributary to Marsh Creek, .5 mile north of the Maryland state line, in Cumberland Township, 30 tons
• Pumping Station Road (State Route 3005) over Willoughby Run, 3 miles southwest of Gettysburg, in Cumberland Township, 30 tons, or 34 tons for combination loads.
• Water Street (State Route 3010) over Spring Run, east of Fairfield in Hamiltonban Township, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Old Carlisle Road (State Route 4001) over Opossum Creek in Centre Mills in Butler Township, 21 tons, or 25 tons for combination loads.
• Shippensburg Road (State Route 4010) over Conewago Creek, 3.5 miles northwest of Arendtsville, between Menallen and Franklin townships, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.

Cumberland County (nine bridges):

• U.S. Route 11 over a wet weather stream in Stoughstown, South Newtown Township, 31 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• U.S. Route 11 over Alexander Spring Creek, 4 miles west of Carlisle, in Dickinson Township, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Route 34 over Hunters Run in South Middleton Township, 33 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Route 174 over the Yellow Breeches Creek, 1 miles northeast of Walnut Bottom, in Penn Township, 35 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Route 997 over Boring Mill Run, 3 miles north of Newburg in Hopewell Township, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Old Forge Road (State Route 2019) over the Yellow Breeches Creek between Lower Allen Township and Fairview Township (York County), 35 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Big Spring Road (State Route 3007) over Big Spring Creek between North Newton and West Pennsboro townships, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Station Road (State Route 3013) over the Yellow Breeches Creek, .5 mile south of Centerville, in Penn Township, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• A state-owned bridge on a township road, Montsera Road (T-544), over the Yellow Breeches Creek in Dickinson Township, 27 tons, or 36 tons for combination loads.

Dauphin County (three bridges):

• Route 147 over Gurdy Run, 1.5 miles north of Halifax, in Halifax Township, 36 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.
• Mountain House Road (State Route 1003) over the North Branch of Armstrong Creek, 1.5 miles south of Elizabethville in Jackson Township, 32 tons.
• Rutter Road (State Route 4004) over Armstrong Creek, 2 miles west of Enders, in Jackson Township, 32 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.

Franklin County (two bridges):

• Route 456 over Licking Creek at the Mason Dixon Line in Warren Township, 34 tons, or 39 tons for combination loads.
• Route 533 over Lehman Run, .5 mile west of Pleasant Hall, in Letterkenny Township, 34 tons, or 40 tons for combination loads.

Lancaster County (31 bridges):

• Route 23, Marietta Pike over Chickies Creek east of Marietta Borough at the West Hempfield/East Donegal Township Line, 34 tons, 40 tons for combined loads.
• Route 241, Bainbridge Road over Conoy Creek near Rutt’s Road southwest of Elizabethtown Borough in West Donegal Township, 27 tons, 32 tons for combined loads.

PennDOT will begin posting new weight limits on these bridges as soon as Thursday, Aug. 29. Notifications to school-bus operators, emergency service providers, and other local officials will begin today. Posting on local bridges will take place at a later date after PennDOT discusses these changes with local bridge owners.
