(York) — The first families have moved into a new affordable-housing neighborhood in the city of York.

The Homes at Thackston Park, a 39-unit mixed-income, tax-credit development on the 300 block of West College Avenue, has been in the works for nearly six years.

Two-, three- and four-bedroom units are available in the $12 million project that will be managed by the York Housing Authority.

Interim Executive Director Craig Zumbrun says the neighborhood is convenient to schools, downtown businesses and the bus transfer station.

“I think that’s exactly the kind of development that will help cities in the future transform themselves and be more viable than many cities in south central Pennsylvania are today,” Zumbrun says.

Construction is set to wrap up this week — two months ahead of schedule.

The 4 1/2 acre complex also includes a community center and an on-site playground.

Several of the units are equipped for housing people with disabilities.
