Sen. Toomey calls for halt to US aid to Egypt
(Washington) — Pennsylvania’s Republican US Senator is calling for the suspension of American aid to Egypt after a string of clashes has left some 900 people dead.
Senator Pat Toomey says the US needs to send a clear message it disapproves of the killing of Egyptian civilians in the wake of the military’s ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi.
He says Egypt’s military has traditionally been a secular, stabilizing force, but dealing with the generals will still be a balancing act.
“It’s a difficult dilemma because, frankly, I think the Egyptian people, the region and the United States would be better off if the Egyptian military wins this civil war against the Islamist fanatics that are on the other side, and are led by the Muslim Brotherhood,” Toomey says.
He says the US should establish criteria for the Egyptian regime to earn its aid.
Toomey points out many of Egypt’s military leaders have been trained at the Army War College in Carlisle.
That includes the country’s top military officer, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
