(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania’s GED test is in the midst of an overhaul.

State Department of Education spokesman Tim Eller says the updated version of the high school equivalency exam will be more rigorous and more in line with career and college-ready standards.

“What that means is what higher education institutions, the business community and the military are looking for in an academic credential coming from the high school level,” Eller explains.

Anyone in the process of obtaining their GED credential must successfully compete all five parts of the exam by December 31st. Otherwise, they’ll have to start from scratch in January.

Eller says Pennsylvania’s existing GED exam dates back to 2002.
