RST: Taking a bite out of dog fighting in PA

Americans were outraged when professional football player Michael Vick was arrested six years ago and subsequently jailed for his part in an interstate dog fighting ring. Vick served 21 months in a federal prison after being convicted of a felony.
However, what the Vick case did was shine a spotlight on dog fighting. States across the country moved to toughen laws and crack down on organized dog fights.
The participants called it a sport and the staged fights included gambling with stakes sometimes in the tens of thousands of dollars. With the increased attention, many large-scale dog fighting operations were shut down.
Unfortunately, it still continues in urban areas across the country, including several in Pennsylvania.
On Wednesday, an animal fighting and cruelty investigation training session will be held at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg for law enforcement and animal welfare investigators and officers.
Monday’s Radio Smart Talk will provide more information on how widespread dog fighting is and what’s being done to stop it.
