(Allentown) — Power companies are encouraging their customers to take some steps to improve efficiency in the hot summer months.

Utilities suggest using programmable thermostats to change a home’s temperature while residents are away.

They also recommend using ceiling fans and planting trees to shade houses.

PPL Electric spokesman Joe Nixon says summer and winter are both high-demand seasons.

“Making sure your house is sealed, don’t have leaky windows and doors, a lot of people associate that with winter, you know, not letting the heat out of your house” Nixon says. “By the same token, you don’t want to let the cool air out of your house, either.”

Nixon says PPL has upgraded its grid to guard against possible outages.

He says summertime is challenging because the added heat puts additional strain on the electrical equipment already trying to keep up with high demand.
