Opponents of PA voter ID law set to rally in Harrisburg
(Harrisburg) — The commonwealth’s controversial voter ID law is being challenged in court. Now, opponents are raising their voices ahead of the trial
The Pennsylvania NAACP plans to lead a rally at the State Capitol tomorrow morning.
The group’s Director of Civic Engagement John Jordan says the law could disenfranchise minorities, the elderly and the poor by requiring all voters to show a photo I-D at the polls.
He says the claim the measure combats election fraud is a distraction.
“It’s 2013. We shouldn’t have this conversation right now,” he says. “(The) only thing that we should be doing right now is making voting easier (and) making registration easier.”
A state judge barred enforcement of the ID requirement during the 2012 presidential election and the May primary.
The trial is slated to begin Monday, July 15th and will look beyond those temporary orders.
A major issue could be the availability of alternative ID cards for voters who don’t have a driver’s license.
