Midstate unemployment drops in May
(Harrisburg) — Unemployment across the commonwealth is down one tenth of a point to 7.5 percent. May’s jobless numbers in the midstate are showing a slight improvement, too.
Analysts at the State Department of Labor and Industry credit seasonal construction activity and industries like resorts and hotels for lowering the unemployment rate one tenth of a point in areas like Lancaster, Lebanon and Chambersburg.
Each saw its jobless rate fall to 6.2 percent, tied for the lowest rate in the region.
Juniata County saw the biggest dip in unemployment — a half-point decrease to 7.2 percent.
The Pottsville are in Schuylkill County has the region’s highest jobless rate at 8.9 percent.
The Gettysburg area saw the midstate’s only increase in unemployment, to 6.3 percent.
The York-Hanover area’s jobless rate dropped to 7.3 percent.
The Harrisburg-Carlisle area’s rate also ticked down one tenth of a point, to 6.8 percent.
