Governor Corbett upbeat on liquor privatization in the Senate

(Harrisburg) — Governor Corbett is upbeat about the prospects of a liquor privatization plan arriving on his desk before July.

The governor again cites consumer choice and convenience as reasons to replace the 600 state-run stores with a proposal to allow private retailers to offer wine and spirits.

Speaking on the Radio Pennsylvania program “Ask the Governor,” Corbett says he expects the state Senate to move quickly on the matter.

“I am confident that it can be, if there is a will within the legislature to do it, and I think there is on some sides, that it can be done by June 30,” Corbett says.

The House approved a privatization plan in March.

Under the bill, grocery stores could sell wine and beer distributors could sell wine and liquor.

After the first year of implementation, other private entities could buy licenses to sell wine and liquor.

The Senate version is expected to be slightly different and require reconciliation with the House plan.
