Resolution near to prom flap involving transgender teen

Rainbow flag, gay rights

(Red Lion) — The American Civil Liberties Union is working with a York County school district to resolve issues surrounding the controversy over a transgender teenager’s attempt to run for prom king.

The Red Lion High School student has self-identified as Issak Wolfe for several years, but is registered under his female birth name of Sierra Stambaugh.

Wolfe has also acknowledged his diploma will be issued in that female name, too.

The district is allowing the student will be allowed to go to the prom tomorrow with his girlfriend, Taylor Thomas.Red Lion High School Principal Mark Shue had threatened to bar Thomas, an alumna of the school, from attending after she criticized him online.

Earlier this week, Shue had denied Wolfe a chance to be prom king by placing him on the ballot under his female birth name in the column for “Prom Queen” — despite requests to be listed under his correct gender identity.

Wolfe is in therapy and plans to undergo a physical transition. The student also wants the district to call him Issak Wolfe and let him wear a boy’s cap-and-gown at graduation May 3rd.
