Army War College in Carlisle prepares for potential sequestration furloughs

(Carlisle) —The commander of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle has outlined the potential furloughs of civilian employee, under sequestration.

At a town hall meeting, Major General Tony Cucolo has told civilian employees and supervisors of the Carlisle Barracks the Defense Department is delaying furlough notices for about two weeks.

He says no decision has been made on whether or not the total number of planned furlough days will change as a result.

If enacted, some 700 civilian workers at the Carlisle Barracks would be required to take 22 days of leave without pay before September 30th, while being hit with a 20 percent cut in salary for 5.5 months.They would also receive a 30-day notification letter.

Military personnel and contractors’ will not be affected andArmy War College classes would continue with schedules to accommodate DoD Civilian students and Civilian faculty, who would be subject to furlough.

Any move to furlough civilian workers would be part of Defense cuts associated with sequestration.

According the commanding general, schedules and services would change once a furlough is enacted:

· Ashburn Gate – to close daily; all traffic routed through Claremont Gate

· Firefighters will maintain continued 24/7 presence with reduced capability/capacity, and with greater reliance on local volunteer fire companies

· Dunham Army Health Clinic – to close Mondays

· Carlisle Barracks Commissary — to close Wednesdays [in addition to the current Monday closures for stocking]

· Legal assistance/ claims – to suspend Monday services

· Military retiree services and ID card services — to close Mondays

· Army Education Center — to close Mondays

· Army Community Service, Substance Abuse Program – to close Mondays

· Army Family Housing – to close Mondays

· Civilian Personnel Office – to close Mondays

· Garrison Headquarters – to close Mondays
