More funding could expand popular majors at state schools

(Harrisburg) — The 14 State System of Higher Education schools are seeing a crush of students for certain, select majors.

Allied health science, audiology, medical imaging and exercise science are some of the most popular majors at campuses like Bloomsburg University.

David Soltz is the president of the school in Columbia County.

He says the university could include more students with more state funding.

“Your chance is one in 15 of getting accepted to Bloomsburg’s nursing program,” Soltz says. “Those are really good applicants. We’d love to be able to take twice that many, but that’s such a high-cost program it’s very difficult to expand it.”

Governor Corbett’s budget keeps funding for the state schools at its current levels.

Soltz says in addition to the medical fields, education and business are also popular fields.

He says the university takes time to provide new students with information on job opportunities after studying certain majors.

The State System of Higher Education also includes campuses in Kutztown, Shippensburg, and Millersville.
