PHEAA to contribute business earnings to grant program
(Harrisburg) — Governor Corbett is expecting the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency to kick in some of its business earnings to fund a state-run grant program, even as his budget proposal keeps the organization’s funding flat.
PHEAA President James Preston says its federal loan servicing operation is growing, with the agency adding some $70 million to state student grant funds this year.
He says they’ve also helped students get money for school through the Pennsylvania Targeted Industry program.
“We refer to it as PA TIP program, which provides grants to students interested in working in the energy, advanced materials, diversified manufacturing, agriculture or food production fields,” Preston says.
He adds PHEAA is looking at changing the rules for distance learning grants to expand them to more eligible students.
He says the maximum state grant award is nearly $4,400 per student.
