Punxsutawney Phil predicts early spring

(Punxsutawney) — Punxsutawney Phil has made his Groundhog Day winter weather prediction this morning in Gobbler’s Knob.

The groundhog’s so-called “protector,” Bob Roberts, announced Phil’s prediction to the crowd: “And so, you faithful, there is no shadow to see. An early spring for you and me!”

If Phil had seen his shadow, legend says there would’ve been six more weeks of winter.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, which runs the event, say the 127th annual celebration in Jefferson County is expected to draw in about 20,000 people, a bigger crowd than usual since Groundhog Day falls on a weekend this year.

The Groundhog Day celebration is part of a German superstition.

Since 1886, Phil has now seen his shadow 100 times and hasn’t seen it just 17 times, according to the Inner Circle.
