war of necessity coverWar of Necessity, War of Choice by Richard N. Haass published by Simon & Schuster

When should the United States go to war? It is arguably the most important foreign policy question facing any president, and Richard Haass -- a member of the National Security Council staff for the first President Bush and the director of policy planning in the State Department for Bush II -- is in a unique position to address it.

Haass will discuss his book on Wednesday's Radio Smart Talk.

Just listened to this - very useful and interesting show. I'd like to use it with students in my International Politics of the Middle East class at Dickinson College later in the semester. Will it be available as a podcast?

Thanks,

Ed

Ed - I also should have mentioned that, yes, each Radio Smart Talk program is available as a podcast. Just look in the right column on this page, and click where it says "Subscribe to Smart Talk podcast" and scroll down. Again, the audio of today's show will be posted there later today.

Yes, this was an interesting show, although I disagree with Haass on some critical points.
Although he posits that some wars are "...necessary, some are of choice" as his latest book title argues, I would say that ALL wars are a choice.

All violence is a choice.

To claim that there is no alternative is refutable simply by seeing that wars which do not occur-----wars which are avoided through other measures even when the likelihood of participants going to war with one another appears imminent---- incur no damages to either party or to innocent bystanders.

I was the last caller on this show:
I rebut what Haass is replying to my question by noting that the control of the American government has for some time now been in the hands of the militarists---(the Iraq war only the latest evidence) ----his argument that the corporations have little to do with American war completely denies the reality of the lobbying and kickback for votes that is the current Wash DC political system, and the huge numbers of corporate labor working in Iraq.
